Developed in collaboration with the Committee for Research and Development (CRD), Library Research Services offer a comprehensive range of services to support your research needs when embarking on a project or publication. The services are available on a personalized basis, and can be adapted to help you undertake preliminary research into a topic, frame research questions, track existing research in a given field, and to support you throughout a research project. Click here to request for the service.

Research Consultation

Librarians in the Information Services and Research Section are available on call to discuss your research needs with you, either in person, by phone or email. The Library can advise on the range of available resources which are most pertinent to your research inquiry, and can assist in designing the most appropriate database search strategies. When you first make a research inquiry with the Library, you will be assigned an Information Librarian with appropriate subject expertise, who will continue to work with you for the duration of your research project. Please contact your Departmental Librarians for further details.

Literature Searches

The Library provides access to over one hundred bibliographic and full-text databases in English and Chinese in most education-related fields. Your assigned Librarian will work with you on designing a search strategy for your topic, and if preferred can also undertake a literature search of databases and library catalogues on your behalf, to ensure that you are covering the full range of print and electronic resources available.

In addition, our librarians will maintain regular contact with you to review the literature search and continue to retrieve more relevant resources for you as your project progresses.

Document Delivery Services

When books and journal articles are not available electronically or in print form in the HKIEd Library collections, the Library can request them on your behalf through its Document Delivery or Inter-Library Loans services.

Research Evaluation Metrics

The Library is developing a suite of research evaluation tools for you to identify the most influential publications in your field. The Journal Citation Reports (JCR) enables you to identify and compare the status and impact factors of a range of leading English language journals in your field. We can provide you with personal assistance and advice in conducting analyses of journals using this product, or can undertake these analyses on your behalf. Other research evaluation tools – such as core journal listings in a particular field – can also be sourced for you where available.

Publisher Details and Contribution Guidelines

If you are interested in publishing in a particular journal, or want to compare the subject areas or requirements of different journals, the Library can locate the journal contribution guidelines and other publication information on your behalf.

Bibliographic Management Tools

With two bibliographic management tools available for your use - Refworks and EndNote – the Library can assist you in managing literature citations while working on a research project or preparing a publication.

Current Awareness Tools – SDI and RSS

The Library can assist you to keep up to date on the latest publishing in your areas of interest by establishing personal SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) research profiles for you with a range of relevant databases and other sources.

In addition, the Library can profile your research topics and interests so that the latest relevant article publishing from electronic databases and journals can be forwarded to you at any time using RSS feeds from your assigned librarians. Guideline for creating and reading RSS feeds can be obtained here.

Workshops and Instruction

The Library can provide individual or group instruction in the use of all of its databases and research tools – such as Journal Citation Reports, EndNote or EdSearch. These can be arranged for a time and venue of your choice, to suit your needs. Please check here for the latest available workshops.
