Author Workshop – An insider's guide to getting published in international research journals

All academics and research staff are invited to join an Emerald Author Workshop hosted by the Institute Library.

In this Workshop conducted by Ms Claire Jackson, Chief Editor – China, Emerald Publishing Group, you will learn:

- How to get published in the right journal
- How to target your work more effectively
- What editors and reviewers actually look for
- ISI, rankings and how important they are to your research
- The key questions that make or break a paper
- How to peer review your own work
- The secrets of revision

EdSearch

This course provides an introduction to EdSEARCH, an easy and personalized interface for you to search simultaneously across a range of electronic resources, including databases and journals subscribed by the Library, as well as selected free online resources. Also includes the steps to save the search results for future reference in your own “eShelf”, on to disk or USB, or to link to other related sites via EdLINK.

Endnote for research purpose

EndNote is a software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies. With this, you can create your own database of citations, bibliographies and figure lists for papers and other publications. EndNote 9 offers features such as searching online databases, importing citation records from library catalogues / e-databases, and integrating searches with Microsoft Word.

This workshop will start from the very basics of using EndNote 9. Contents will cover the procedures of starting EndNote 9, introducing its interface, creating an EndNote library, and sorting/ retrieving references in an EndNote library. And then we will focus on discussing EndNote connection files, importing/ exporting references to/ from EndNote, working with Microsoft Word (Cite While You Write), and printing bibliographies.

Finding Newspaper Articles

The aims of this workshop are to introduce different formats of newspaper articles available in Library, and to demonstrate how to locate and retrieve local and overseas newspaper articles from e-databases such as WiseNews and other online newspapers from the internet After attending this workshop, students will be able to grasp the techniques of searching and retrieving newspaper articles electronically. Participants will also have the opportunity to try out the resources introduced and practise the skills discussed in the session.

Library Skills for Postgraduate Studies

Content of this workshop will include (1) formulating search strategies, (2) finding information using EdCAT- Library Catalogue, research databases and other electronic resources.

Locating & Using Library Resources

What resources does library provide?
Which kind of materials is available both in the library and on the web?
Where can you locate the teaching kits?
How to use the catalogue?

If your answer is "I don't know", then you must come to this workshop. This workshop will introduce different kinds of library resources and guidance for you to find the appropriate materials. It is a good start to familiarize yourselves with HKIEd library as you will spend a lot of time here in your studies.

Preparing bibliographies / reference lists

This workshop will be focusing on the citation style APA, which is the required citation style for HKIEd students and staff in preparing their papers. Examples of citing books, journals, book chapters will be illustrated; various techniques and methods of preparing bibliographies/ reference lists will also be discussed and practised during the workshop. Some examples on citing Chinese materials will also be covered.

RefWorks for research purpose

RefWorks is an online bibliographic management tool newly-subscribed by the Library. It helps you to organize bibliographies for teaching and research.

During the workshop, we will introduce the basic skills of using RefWorks, such as creating your own account, entering and importing references from Library Catalogues and e-databases (Chinese and English). The workshop will also teach how to manage your personal database of bibliographies and to compile bibliographies in a variety of citation styles such as APA, MLA and Chicago.

Research evaluation tools - Journal Citation Reports

Journal Citation Reports (JCR - Social Sciences Edition) is a research tool which will enable you to evaluate the quality and impact of over 1,700 of the world's leading journals in the social sciences.

During the workshop, we will introduce some useful methods of retrieving JCR's wealth of information, which enables you to assess the largest, most frequently cited, most topical and highest impact journals in your field. We will also demonstrate how this type of information can be used as an indicator of the highest impact, most important or relevant journals in which to publish, in addition to offering some indication of the status of the journals in which you have published previously.

Scopus

Scopus, an abstracting and indexing database covering some 15,000 peer-reviewed journal titles in the social sciences, health sciences, life sciences and physical sciences.

Similar to Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Scopus offers the tools to track citation for research evaluation. Indictors such as author evaluation, total citation counts, number of documents published and the h-index are good research evaluation tools.

Searching Dissertations & Theses

Research students requiring to find dissertations and theses should attend this workshop to see how and where dissertations and theses can be found. Two databases will be introduced in the workshop: 1) Hong Kong University Theses Online, 2) ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. We will also explore other library subscribed databases, library catalogue and other resources from Hong Kong web sites.

Hands-on practices and examples will be included.

Using Education databases

This workshop is suitable for beginners who are not familiar with using education e-databases. It provides an introduction on using ERIC & Academic Search Premier for your studies and research, followed by a demonstration on how to use EdLINK to retrieve full-text articles from e-resources subscribed by the Library, and to locate other possible sources which may contain the required information from other Education databases such as A+Education from Australia, British Education Index from UK, ProQuest Education Journal, Academic Research Library, etc. Again, demonstration and hands-on practices are provided during the class.

Using E-journals

Library subscribes to more than 10,000 e-journals, which are essential for your studies and research. In this workshop, we will guide you through steps of locating useful e-journals via EdCAT and e-journal collections, so that you will be able to retrieve relevant academic articles for your assignments/ projects.

Apabi Chinese e-book / Books 24x7 - IT Pro Collection

This workshop will introduce various e-book collections available in Library. SpringerLink e-Books provides electronic versions of scholarly monographs in the area of social sciences, education, psychology, language, environment, etc.

Another e-book collection: Gale Virtual Reference Library, an e-book database of encyclopedias, almanacs and reference sources supporting multidisciplinary research.

Apabi Chinese e-book 《阿帕比中文電子書》是圖書館首個大型中文電子書數據庫,提供一千多本於國內出版並由圖書館選定的中文書。學科範圍涵蓋教育、人文科學、文化及社會科學。

Books 24x7 - IT Pro Collection is an online collection of ebooks, covering the areas of IT. It provides full contents of over 5,000 e-books from IT publishers, including Microsoft Press, McGraw-Hill, Sybex.

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) - Social Sciences Edition
A resource tool for the evaluation of social sciences journals, containing data from over 1,700 journals in social sciences. Users can filter the journals by subject and then sort them by impact factor, immediacy index, total cites, current articles, cited half-life, or journal title.

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)
The Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) provide access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references found in over 1,700 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 50 disciplines. They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 3,300 of the world's leading science and technology journals.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)
The Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) provide access to current and retrospective bibliographic information and cited references found in nearly 1,130 of the world's leading arts & humanities journals. They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 7,000 of the world's leading science and social sciences journals.
